Psst... Make me count to 10 and I have a surprise for you!
Repeating things with no apparent goal (such as counting sheep), can settle the mind and divert our attention away from distractions.
Thatβs basically what meditation is all about.
When you are tense, breathing deeply and focusing on something monotonous can lead to a relaxed state which makes you drowsy and helps you fall asleep.
There are references to the counting of sheep in literature dating back to the 16th century in England.
The idea is that focusing on the monotonous counting of sheep would help someone to relax and drift off into sleep.
To count the sheep, start by visualizing a single sheep and counting it out loud.
(I can help you do the counting out loud part. Like, really loud!!)
Try focusing on the relaxing rhythm of counting, allowing your body and mind to slow down and drift off to sleep.
